Birkenstock to end business relationship with Amazon EU subsidiary

German footwear company Birkenstock GmbH & Co. KG said Dec. 11 that it is ending business relations with Amazon EU Sarl, a European subsidiary of Amazon.com Inc., beginning Jan. 1, 2018, alleging counterfeit Birkenstock products are sold on its platform in Europe.

The footwear company said it will discontinue direct deliveries provided by Amazon's European subsidiary. Birkenstock charged that the fake merchandise on the site in the EU has misled customers on the quality and origin of the products they purchase.

Amazon did not return a request for comment Dec. 12.

Birkenstock said there has been a "breakdown in trust" between the two companies. The German footwear company said Amazon still has made no binding statement that counterfeit products will not be sold on its European platform.

Last January, Birkenstock said it discontinued deliveries of its products on Amazon in the U.S. for the same reasons.
