Judge nixes petition to close part of Redstone trial

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge David Cowan tentativelyruled that the trialabout the mental competency of Sumner Redstone, chairman emeritus of and , should be public, Reutersreported April 27.

Redstone's attorneys reportedly had urged that his right tomedical privacy entailed that parts of the trial should be held behind closeddoors. However, Cowan said that it would be impractical to hold part of thetrial in private. Cowan added that he would limit the information entered asevidence after carefully examining Redstone's medical records, while the optionto request for shielding specific testimony will remain open to both parties,according to the report.

The judge deferred judgment on a request for Redstone toappear as witness. The trial has been scheduled for May 6.
