Ørsted A/S has started operations at the Hornsea One wind farm off the Yorkshire Coast in the U.K.
The 1,218-MW project, touted as the world's largest offshore wind farm, is expected to be fully operational in early 2020. To date, over 50 of the 174 Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy SA's 7-MW turbines are operational, according to a June 2 news release.
"We already have the largest installed offshore wind capacity in the world, and once fully up and running this wind farm will provide enough power for one million more homes, putting us well on the way to our target of a third of the UK's electricity coming from offshore wind by 2030," U.K. Energy and Clean Growth Minister Chris Skidmore said.
