UAW exec charged with embezzlement

A regional director at the United Auto Workers union is facing embezzlement charges as part of an ongoing federal investigation into alleged corrupt practices by union officials, the Wall Street Journal reported Sept. 12, citing the U.S. Attorney's Office.

UAW Region 5 Missouri director Vance Pearson is being accused of working with other union officers to embezzle "hundreds of thousands" of dollars in union money, according to the report. Pearson was charged on Thursday with embezzlement, fraud and money laundering, WSJ said.

In a statement, the union said that "while these allegations are very concerning, we strongly believe that the government has misconstrued any number of facts and emphasize that these are merely allegations, not proof of wrongdoing."

UAW also said that it will remain focused on its crucial negotiations with General Motors Co. regarding wages and benefits.

According to the Journal, Pearson is the first sitting union official but the 10th person overall to be charged in the long-running probe, which initially focused on UAW officials at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV but has since extended to the union's General Motors chapter.

In August, the home of UAW President Gary Jones was among those raided by the FBI in relation to the federal investigation into alleged bribery practices among U.S. automakers and union officials. Earlier this month, a former UAW official in the union's General Motors division pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges.

The charges against Pearson come days before UAW's contracts with General Motors, Ford Motor Co. and Fiat Chrysler are set to expire, the report said.
