Urban Grid Solar receives permit to construct 20-MW Va. solar project

Solar project developer Urban Grid Solar LLC was granted a permit by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality to construct and operate the 20-MW Briel Farm Solar facility in Henrico County, Va.

The solar project is expected to generate enough power for 5,000 homes and to offset about 64.7 million pounds of carbon dioxide, approximately 44,000 pounds of nitrogen oxide and about 51,000 pounds of sulfur dioxide, according to a news release by Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam's office.

Virginia's installed solar capacity has expanded to 300 MW in 2018 from 17 MW in 2014. According to the news release, Virginia's total projected capacity for renewable energy is more than 3,400 MW, based on the current number of notices received by the department for additional solar projects.
