A unit of Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance Co. filed a lawsuit against Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., arguing it is not responsible for indemnifying Goodyear against asbestos-related injury claims.

"Thousands" of claims have been filed against the tire manufacturer over alleged exposure to asbestos that its products caused consumers.

Goodyear is seeking to use an insurance policy taken out with the Berkshire unit to cover those claims, but in its suit, the insurer has argued that it is not required to cover Goodyear because the company did not make a claim for the losses until years after the incidents.

The Berkshire Hathaway Inc. subsidiary is seeking unspecified damages in the suit.
