A court in Sweden rejected charges brought against Boliden AB over the export of industrial waste to Chile in the 1980s, Reuters reported March 8.
The company had been sued in 2013 for about 100 million Swedish kronor in a lawsuit filed by about 800 citizens of the city of Arica.
"Our initial assessment is that this largely confirms the view that we have had, that this was done according to the existing rules and regulations," said Boliden spokesperson Klas Nilsson.
Boliden in the mid-1980s exported smelter sludge to Arica to reprocess the material under an agreement with Chilean company Promel.
However, Promel ended operations in the early 1990s and the waste was never fully processed. The company had argued that it carried out the exports responsibly, denying any wrongdoing.
As of March 8, US$1 was equivalent to 8.26 Swedish krona.
