Canada sues Volkswagen over emissions violations

Volkswagen AG is facing multiple counts of vehicle emissions violations in Canada after it allegedly imported cars that were not compliant with the country's vehicle emissions standards.

The Canadian government said Dec. 9 that it has filed at least 60 counts of contravening the Canadian Environmental Protection Act of 1999 against the German carmaker. Around 58 of the violations occurred between January 2008 and December 2015 when the company allegedly illegally imported nearly 128,000 vehicles that did not conform to the country's prescribed vehicle emission standards.

A court appearance is scheduled on Dec. 13 in the Ontario Court of Justice.

In 2015, Volkswagen admitted to manipulating vehicle emissions tests to meet U.S. standards during regulatory testing.
