Ahold Delhaize unit to eliminate artificial ingredients from US private brands

Retail Business Services, a unit of Dutch supermarket operator Koninklijke Ahold Delhaize NV's subsidiary Ahold Delhaize USA, said Oct. 17 that it has committed to eliminating artificial ingredients from all its private-brand product offerings by 2025.

Retail Business Services supplies such products to Ahold Delhaize's food retail brands in the U.S., which include Food Lion, Giant Food, Giant/Martin's, Hannaford, Peapod and Stop & Shop. In addition to namesake lines for the retailers, it produces the private brands Nature's Promise, Taste of Inspirations, CareOne, Smart Living, Always My Baby, Etos, Companion, Limited Time Originals, Guaranteed Value and Cha-Ching.

The company plans to remove artificial flavors, preservatives and sweeteners from the ingredients used in those brand lines, along with synthetic coloring, MSG and high-fructose corn syrup.

Retail Business Services also will continue product innovations that cut back on salt and sugar content, support sustainable chemistry practices for products and packaging, and reduce waste. It also plans to make more allergen-free products and strengthen guidelines for its organic brand Nature's Promise.

The move comes after Ahold Delhaize launched an easy-to-read nutrition label for Delhaize-branded food products in August.
