CMS: About 8.8 million people enrolled in '18 ACA plans

Just over 8.8 million people selected Affordable Care Act health insurance plans, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services said Dec. 21.

That sum included about 2.4 million new consumers and about 6.4 million returning consumers who renewed their coverage.

The agency specifies "plan selections" as the total number of people who have submitted an application and selected a plan, excluding cancellations.

Open enrollment on the federal exchange began Nov. 1 and ended Dec. 15.
