International Consolidated Airlines Group SA intends to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050 through multiple initiatives, contributing to the U.K. government's commitment to the same.
IAG's subsidiary British Airways PLC will offset the carbon emissions from its U.K. flights from 2020 by investing in equivalent verified carbon reduction projects including solar energy and forestation, among other things.
IAG plans to invest $400 million in sustainable aviation fuel over the next two decades and intends to replace older aircraft with 142 new ones for a list price of $27 billion over the next five years. The new aircraft are up to 25% more carbon-efficient than the older versions, the company said in a statement.
The initiatives will also help with the United Nations' goal to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
