Blackjewel increased Q3 coal production 28% at 2 Powder River Basin mines

Blackjewel LLC significantly increased coal production from its two Powder River Basin coal mines in the third quarter.

The company produced about 10.0 million tons of coal in the most recent period from the Belle Ayr and Eagle Butte mines bought from Contura Energy Inc. in late 2017, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence data. That is about 28.4% more coal than those mines produced in the second quarter. Belle Ayr and Eagle Butte produced a total of 9.0 million tons of coal in the third quarter of 2017.

Blackjewel owner Jeff Hoops previously said the two operations had been unaffected "one way or the other" by heavy rains that impacted much of the region in the second quarter. Belle Ayr and Eagle Butte, respectively, were the fourth and fifth largest mines in the Powder River Basin in that period.

Hoops did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the production increase.
