Slovak prime minister offers to quit amid crisis sparked by journalist's murder

In a move to calm the political crisis sparked by the murder of a journalist, Slovakia's Prime Minister Robert Fico said he would resign on condition that his party be allowed to pick his successor, Reuters reported.

Fico's announcement comes amid calls for snap elections by the junior coalition party Most-Hid and the largest street protest since 1989 over the murder of Jan Kuciak, who wrote about fraud cases involving businessmen with political ties.

"I proposed that in order to solve the political crisis I am ready to resign as prime minister," Fico reportedly told a televised news conference.

He added that in exchange, Slovak President Andrej Kiska will respect the last election results and coalition agreement. This offer gives his party the chance to nominate the next prime minister, according to Reuters.
