Ex-COO sues Afena CU over alleged age, sex discrimination

Marion, Ind.-based Afena FCU is being sued by its former COO and vice president of operations over alleged sex and age discrimination.

Kathie McAtee on Dec. 1 filed a lawsuit in U.S. district court against the credit union, claiming that the credit union terminated her position only to delegate most of the COO duties to Steve Conrad, a male employee who was under 40 years old.

On Dec. 27, Afena FCU answered McAtee's lawsuit denying her allegations of discrimination.

McAtee is more than 60 years old and has been working in the credit union since September 2007 as vice president of operations and COO.

McAtee claims that aside from her positions, she also handled duties and responsibilities for the CFO position, which was vacant from summer of 2013 until July 2016. She claims that she did not receive additional compensation for performing CFO duties. In addition, McAtee applied to be the credit union's CEO in early 2014, but Karen Gilliam-Brown got the job despite McAtee's seniority.

McAtee is requesting a jury trial to resolve the case, and is seeking to be reinstated. She also seeks lost pay, benefits, and punitive damages.
