US rig count down by 6, slips below 900 level

The combined oil and natural gas rig count in the U.S. tumbled by six to 898 rigs during the week ended Sept. 6, according to the latest Rotary Rig Count released by Baker Hughes a GE company.

The count is also down 150 rigs from the same period a year ago.

Oil-directed rigs were down by four to 738 rigs for the review period and dropped 122 rigs from the same week a year ago. Gas-directed rigs came in at 160, shedding two for the week and are 26 rigs lower than values reported a year ago.

North American rigs were pegged at 1,045, down by nine for the week and 207 rigs lower than figures seen during the same week in 2018. Canadian rigs tumbled by three to 147 rigs and are down 57 rigs from a year ago.

U.S. land rigs shed six to come in at 870 for the week ended Sept. 6 and declined by 156 rigs from a year ago. Inland water rigs stood at zero for consecutive weeks and are down three rigs from the corresponding week in 2018. Offshore rigs were unchanged for the review period at 28 but are up nine rigs from a year ago.

By direction, vertical rigs came in at 48, down two for the period and 17 rigs lower than the same week in 2018. Directional rigs fell by three to 67 rigs but are two rigs higher than values reported a year ago. Horizontal rigs were pegged at 783, down by one for the week and dropping 135 rigs from the corresponding period in 2018.
