A week-long strike came to an end at South32 Ltd.'s Hillside aluminum smelter in South Africa after over 600 members of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa accepted the company's latest wage offer, Reuters reported Oct. 6, citing the union.
The workers settled for between 5.1% and 5.6% wage hikes in the first year, with increases in the second year linked to inflation, which is currently running at 4.8%.
Earlier in the week of Oct. 2, NUMSA threatened to intensify the ongoing strike at the smelter after negotiations to resolve wage hike-related concerns reached an impasse.
