The European Commission is set to approve Microsoft Corp.'s proposed $7.5 billion acquisition of GitHub Inc., Reuters reported Oct. 8, citing two sources.

The commission has until Oct. 19 to release its decision, after Microsoft requested approval Sept. 14.

Once completed, GitHub would be part of Microsoft's Intelligent Cloud segment. However it would continue to operate independently with an open platform available to all developers across operating systems, cloud systems and devices.

The deal is expected to close by year-end.
