Ajit Pai, chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, said the agency cannot revoke the license of a broadcaster over newscast content, Broadcasting & Cable reported Oct. 17.
Speaking at an event in Washington, Pai said that he supported the First Amendment and "traditionally" it has not been in the FCC's jurisdiction to decide on what was "fake news."
The comments came after President Donald Trump suggested in a tweet that a broadcaster's license with the agency should be revoked. The tweet came after Comcast Corp.'s NBC News reported Trump had proposed a 10x increase in the U.S. nuclear arsenal.
Gordon Smith, president and CEO of the National Association of Broadcasters, had slammed Trump for threatening to revoke broadcast TV licenses.
