NRG Yield Inc. initiated a forced outage in units 5 and 6 of the El Segundo Energy Center in January. The outage was prompted by increasing vibrations from continuous operations at unit 5, according to a Feb. 3 filing.
The NRG Energy Inc. yieldco expects the outage to have a cash impact of about $12 million in 2017, prior to recovery from warranty or insurance coverage. NRG Yield will replace the rotor in unit 5 and plans to bring both units back online by the end of February.
According to SNL Energy data, El Segundo's current operating capacity is 510 MW. The natural gas-fueled, combined-cycle facility near Los Angeles sells its output to Edison International subsidiary Southern California Edison Co. under a 10-year power contract.
