EDP Renováveis wins 2 contracts in Colombia renewables auction

EDP Renováveis SA said it won two 15-year power purchase agreements through an auction for renewable energy resources organized by the Colombian government.

The contracts will cover the output of the company's 212-MW Alpha and 280-MW Beta wind farms, it said in an Oct. 22 news release. The facilities are in an advanced development stage and will begin commercial operations in 2022.

Overall, the Colombian government awarded eight contracts — five for wind resources and three for solar — to seven generators. Colombia did not immediately identify the selected companies but, according to a Reuters report, said the contracts would bring in a combined investment of about $2.2 billion. The country gets most of its electricity from hydroelectric resources and wants to add 2,200 MW from wind, solar and biomass by 2022.

EDP Renováveis is a renewable energy subsidiary of EDP - Energias de Portugal SA. Earlier this year, it won contracts from the Colombian government to build the two wind farms.
