Entergy New Orleans Inc. is seeking the approval of the New Orleans City Council to build 5 MW of commercial-scale rooftop solar systems on identified rooftops in Orleans Parish.
"While expansive tracts of open land may be available to build a larger-scale solar project in other parts of the country, it just isn't as feasible here due to higher costs and wetlands issues. That's why we're pursuing several different solar resources, including this project," Entergy New Orleans President and CEO Charles Rice said in an Oct. 10 company release.
In May, the Entergy Corp. subsidiary chose three proposals from its 2016 renewables request for proposals totaling approximately 45 MW in pursuit of its goal to contract 100 MW of renewable resources.
The projects, to be built on buildings and other properties, will be secured under long-term leases, while a company-owned site will serve as a demonstration project. The solar additions will complement its 1-MW solar pilot project in New Orleans East, which was placed online last year.
