Nokia stepping up efforts to cut carbon emissions

Nokia Corp. joined other companies in speeding up efforts to reduce carbon emissions in a bid to keep global warming below the 1.5 degrees C-limit as agreed under the Paris Agreement on climate change.

The company pushed for the adoption of 5G as a "natively green" next-generation mobile connectivity solution, arguing that it is more energy efficient than 4G.

Nokia is also working to make its products and solutions more energy efficient. Its lineup includes the ReefShark chipset, which can reduce power consumption of base stations by as much as 64% while also improving performance, and a liquid cooling system that can cut a base station's carbon dioxide emissions by up to 80%.

Furthermore, Nokia is working to digitalize its operations while seeking to reduce travel and emissions across the company.

"Nokia is prioritizing practices, products and services that minimize negative environmental impact and maximize the efficient use of resources, both for us and for our customers," President and CEO Rajeev Suri said in a Sept. 23 blog post.

At the same time, Suri called on pressure groups, businesses and governments to work together to limit global warming. He urged governments, in particular, to implement clear, long-term environmental policies for businesses.

The Finnish technology giant previously committed to cutting carbon dioxide emissions of its products by 75% before 2030, as well as to reduce its operational emissions by 41%, Suri said.
