Facebook's Oculus buys eye-tracking startup

Facebook Inc.'s virtual reality unit Oculus VR, Inc. acquired Copenhagen-based startup, The Eye Tribe, TechCrunch reported Dec. 28.

Oculus reportedly confirmed the acquisition of the startup. The Eye Tribe has developed technology that allows VR systems to save power by generating perfect graphics based on where the user is looking. The technology works by creating a focal point which moves with users' eyes.

The Eye Tribe has also developed developer kits, which cost $99, that can help developers deliver "gaze-based interfaces" to smartphones and VR headsets. Oculus could potentially use the technology for its Santa Cruz headset.
