The Week in OTT: Charter-Disney deal covers streaming; Netflix orders new series

The week in over-the-top provides a recap of recent news related to streaming initiatives in the U.S. from various networks and platforms.

* Netflix Inc. announced its second Danish original series, "The Chestnut Man," at the Copenhagen TV Festival. The series, which is based on the debut novel by writer Søren Sveistrup, will debut exclusively on the streaming service worldwide, the company said Aug. 19.

* Filmmaker Kevin Smith will create a new animated "He-Man" series for Netflix, Variety reported Aug. 18. Smith will be the showrunner and executive producer for the new series, dubbed "Masters of the Universe: Revelation."

* Charter Communications Inc. and The Walt Disney Co. struck a new multiyear distribution agreement to deliver an expanding portfolio of Disney-owned sports, news and entertainment content to Spectrum customers, including via new streaming platforms. The new deal expands upon the companies' previous agreement and will allow Spectrum to distribute Disney's direct-to-consumer offerings Hulu LLC, ESPN+ and the soon-to-launch Disney+.

* Netflix ordered young adult series "Ginny & Georgia," Variety reported Aug. 13. The 10-episode season is scheduled to launch on the streaming platform in 2020.

* AT&T Inc.'s HBO Max and the British Broadcasting Corp.'s BBC Three commissioned a six-part comedy "Starstruck" from Avalon Television Ltd., according to an Aug. 12 news release. HBO Max will become the U.S. broadcast partner for the series. The series will follow a millennial in London juggling two dead-end jobs and navigating the awkward morning-after-the-night-before when she discovers the complications of accidentally sleeping with a film star.

* Netflix will premiere the third season of "The Crown" on Nov. 17, according to an Aug. 12 announcement on the show's Twitter Inc. page. The third series comes about two years after the second season premiered. A fourth season of the series is in production, but the streaming giant has not disclosed the premiere date, according to an Aug. 12 report by Variety.
