Walmart's California workers getting $34M share of bonuses

Walmart Inc. said March 8 that more than 136,000 of its employees in California will receive approximately $34 million of the more than $560 million in cash bonuses being offered by the retail giant across the U.S.

The amount comprises bonuses based on store performance for the fiscal fourth quarter of 2018 as well as one-time bonuses resulting from recent changes to U.S. tax law. They were included in March 8 paychecks, along with an annual pay raise for hourly workers.

For full-year fiscal 2018, employees at Walmart's California operations, which include 304 retail locations, shared more than $68 million of the over $625 million in performance-based bonuses provided nationwide.

The retailer had previously announced several changes in compensation for its U.S. operations, including lifting the starting hourly wage to at least $11, expanding maternity and parental leave benefits, giving a one-time cash bonus of up to $1,000 to certain employees, and offering an adoption assistance benefit of $5,000 per child.
