Florida Power & Light Co. installed a 10-MW/40-MWh battery storage system at its 74.5-MW Babcock Ranch Solar Energy Center.
The NextEra Energy Inc. subsidiary in a March 9 news release said the project in Charlotte County, Fla., is the largest operating solar-plus-storage system in the U.S.
In 2016, FPL commissioned several battery storage pilot projects to test different applications under real-world operating conditions. In February, the utility installed a 4-MW/16-MWh battery system at the FPL Citrus Solar Energy Center in DeSoto County.
NextEra said its companies operate a total of approximately 140 MW of batteries with more than 150 MWh of storage capacity. Earlier in March, FPL energized four new solar projects with a combined capacity of 300 MW that are future candidates for battery storage systems.
Additionally, the company announced four new 74.5-MW solar projects with a combined capacity of 300 MW at various locations in Florida.
By 2020, FPL projects solar will outpace coal and oil as a percentage of the utility's energy mix.
