Coal demand in Indonesia surges despite weak global demand

Theglobal slump in coalhas done little to hamper domestic consumption in Indonesia, The Jakarta Post reported Oct. 5, citingBP plc's Statistical Review2016, with usage continuing to increase.

Accordingto BP, the rise in domestic consumption has been evident since 2010, due inlarge part to constant production despite the steep decline in global coaldemand. In 2015, coal accounted for roughly 41% of the country's total energyconsumption, said the report.

Inaddition, the government unveiled a 35,000-MW electricity program, in whichcoal-fueled power plants will satisfy roughly 50% of electricity generation, according to the report.
