Republicans narrowly held onto Ohio's 12th congressional district seat in a special election widely viewed as a test of Democrats' chances of retaking the U.S. House of Representatives in November.
Republican Troy Balderson narrowly defeated Democrat Danny O'Connor to succeed former House Ways and Means Committee stalwart Pat Tiberi. Balderson's winning margin was certified by the state of Ohio on Aug. 24, following a recount. The election was held Aug. 7.
President Donald Trump held a rally to support Balderson in the run-up to the balloting and claimed an important role in his victory before the final votes had been tallied.
Balderson defeated Danny O'Connor by 1,680 votes less than two years after Trump won the district by 11 points in the 2016 presidential election, according to the Associated Press.
