Report: Apple may face antitrust action in Japan over iPhone sales

Japaneseregulators may take antitrust action against Apple Inc. over its agreements with local carriers to selliPhones, Reuters reported Sept. 23, citing government sources.

Japan's Fair Trade Commission a report in August, accusingthe country's largest telcos –– SoftBankGroup Corp., NTTDoCoMo Inc. and KDDICorp. –– of refusing to sell older surplus iPhones to third partyretailers. The Commission also hinted that it could start monitoring many U.S.tech giants more closely for their business practices in Japan.

While Apple was not directly named in the FTC report, "twosenior government sources" reportedly said regulators were also lookinginto the supply deals the iPhone-maker had struck with the three carriers.

The FTC has not given any deadline nor commented on whatpenalties would be imposed if the companies do not act, according to the report.
