German sportswear giant Adidas AG has discontinued its digital sports business division, Women's Wear Daily reported Dec. 14, citing a company spokeswoman.
The unit reportedly was responsible for the development of wearable technology and consisted of technology experts in data science and experience design, among other fields.
The closure puts the jobs of about 74 employees at risk, but the spokeswoman told WWD that the company hopes to find other positions for the affected workers.
The news outlet said the move is aligned with Adidas CEO Kasper Rorsted's plans for a more digital experience. It also reportedly allows the retailer to focus on Runtastic and the Adidas app, which are two of its most powerful platforms, according to WWD.
The report added that the sportswear giant has yet to determine whether it will continue to develop software and hardware.
