Volkswagen AG is collaborating with Siemens AG to develop new road safety technologies at intersections, according to an Oct. 4 release.
The Car2X technology, known as WLANp (ITS-G5), enables vehicles to communicate with traffic lights and is undergoing trials in the German city of Wolfsburg.
The two companies are setting up a test section on a main road where 10 traffic signal systems will transmit the traffic light phases in the vicinity to the cars.
Car2X-linked vehicles will communicate with the traffic lights and inform the driver about the traffic light signals ahead, avoiding unnecessary braking or acceleration. In addition, sensors mounted on traffic lights can detect cyclists and pedestrians to warn drivers of their presence.
Volkswagen plans to introduce the WLANp technology in 2019.
