Queensland government to grant A$15M to Glencore for Mount Isa copper smelter

Glencore Plc will receive a grant of A$15 million from the Queensland, Australia, government to rebrick its Mount Isa copper smelter.

The rebricking will extend the life of the smelter to 2022, MiningNews wrote Dec. 21, citing Glencore Copper Assets Australia COO Mike Westerman.

"The offer of a $15 million grant is about working with a crucial copper and zinc business in Mount Isa which employs 4,000 people and indirectly supports thousands more jobs in the regional economy," acting premier Curtis Pitt said on Dec. 20.

Pitt added that the state government will continue discussions with Glencore in 2017 about additional government assistance.

The grant is conditional upon the company's commitment to maintaining third-party access to the smelter, according to the statement.
