Company seeking permit for surface coal mine in Kentucky

Premier Elkhorn Coal LLC is seeking to constructinfrastructure related to a new surface coal mining operation in Kentucky.

According to a public notice published by the U.S. ArmyCorps of Engineers, Premier is seeking a permit to construct a permanent excessdisposal fill, an instream sediment control pond and three haul road streamcrossings. The proposed operation, the permit states, would mine 3.3 milliontons of coal from a 280-acre mine area.

The proposed fill and pond to be constructed for the projectwould permanently impact 1,400 linear feet of perennial streams and 1,580linear feet of ephemeral streams. The road crossings would impact 200 linearfeet of perennial stream and 390 linear feet of ephemeral streams.

The site is located in Pike County, Ky. According to U.S.Mine Safety and Health Administration data, other mines operated by the samecompany in the region are controlled by James H. Booth, the president and CEOof Booth Energy Group.
