Carlsberg unveils paper beer bottle

Carlsberg A/S said Oct. 11 that it has developed a paper beer bottle that is made from 100% bio-based and fully recyclable wood fibers.

The Denmark-based beer and malt liquor brewer came up with two prototypes of the Green Fiber Bottle, with one made with a thin recycled PET polymer film barrier and another with 100% bio-based PEF polymer film barrier.

The announcement comes about a year after Carlsberg unveiled its adhesive cans called Snap Pack, which replaced the plastic ring bundling beer can six-packs. At the time, the company also announced new measures to further reduce its use of plastic, including a new coating made to extend the lifespan of refillable bottles and new caps to extend the shelf life of beer.

In its latest release, Carlsberg said it started working on the Green Fiber Bottle project in 2015 with a team of experts at packaging companies EcoXpac A/S and BillerudKorsnäs AB (publ), and with researchers from the Danish Technical University, supported by Innovation Fund Denmark.

Since then, Carlsberg has established a joint venture called Paboco, a paper bottle company, with Sweden's BillerudKorsnäs and bottle manufacturing specialist Alpla.

Paboco has attracted new partners including Coca-Cola Co., Pernod Ricard SA-owned The Absolut Co. AB and L'Oréal SA in its "paper bottle community."

Recently, French cosmetics giant L'Oréal partnered with packaging company Albéa SA to develop a carton-based tube packaging for cosmetic products.
