Report: FBI's unlocking method will not affect newer iPhone models

FBI Director James Comey said the method used to unlock an Apple Inc. iPhone 5c used by one of the San Bernardino, Calif.,shooters will not work on newer iPhone models, Reuters reported April 8.

Speaking at a conference, Comey said the tool works on a narrowslice of phones and would not affect the iPhone 5s and the later models iPhone 6and iPhone 6s.

Also, the U.S. Department of Justice informed the U.S. DistrictJudge, Eastern District of New York that it will not modify its March 7 applicationseeking the tech giant's assistance in accessing data that it is authorized to searchby warrant, according to an April 8 letter sent to the court.

The letter comes as the DOJ requested a New York court to forcethe tech giant to unlock an iPhone 5s as part of a drug trafficking . The iPhone maker could use legal discoveryto force the FBI to disclose the technique used to unlock the iPhone used by theSan Bernardino shooter, a source familiar with the situation reportedly said.
