Indonesia's Bukit Asam targets increased coal production in 2020

Indonesian state-owned PT Bukit Asam Tbk seeks to increase coal production to 30 million tonnes in 2020, compared to the 28.5 Mt anticipated this year, Reuters reported Dec. 23, citing company officials.

About 60% of Bukit Asam's 2020 production will go to an Indonesian state-run power utility, while 30% will be exported, mostly to India, according to Adib Ubaidillah, the company's director of commerce.

Bukit Asam scrapped plans to build a coal gasification facility on Sumatra to prioritize the construction of plants near its Tanjung Enim coal mine on the island, Reuters quoted CEO Arviyan Arifin as saying.

Bukit Asam will partner with another state enterprise, oil and gas company PT Pertamina (Persero), as well as U.S.-based Air Products & Chemicals Inc. to build the facility and a petrochemical complex producing various products including methanol, ethanol and fertilizers.
