Theresa May to take over as UK prime minister on July 13, Cameron says

TheU.K. is set to have a new prime minister on July 13, The Guardian reported July11, citing current Prime Minister David Cameron.

Earlieron July 11, Andrea Leadsom dropped out of the race to succeed Cameron, leavingthe position open for Home Secretary Theresa May to take over.

"I'm… delighted that Theresa May will be the next prime minister," Cameronsaid in a statement. He added that he will offer his resignation July 13 andthat the new prime minister will be in place that evening.

Cameronsaid June 24 — theday the result of Britain's vote to leave the EU became clear — that he wouldstep aside by October, and allow a new leader to trigger Article 50 of theLisbon Treaty and begin the two-year Brexit negotiation process.
