Italy's consumer confidence rises, business confidence declines in September

Consumer confidence in Italy picked up while the business confidence climate continued to weaken month over month in September, data from the country's National Institute of Statistics showed.

After a decline in August, the consumer confidence index increased to 112.2 from 111.9, as both the future and personal components of the index registered monthly gains. The current component was unchanged while the economic component edged down.

Meanwhile, the index measuring the business confidence climate slipped to 98.5 from 98.9, with the index gauging business confidence in the manufacturing sector dropping to 98.8 from 99.6, as order book assessments and production expectations deteriorated.

The retail trade confidence index also declined to 107.6 from 109.9, as opinions on current sales worsened while future sales expectations improved.

The market services confidence index rose to 98.5 from 97.4 and the construction confidence index climbed to 143.2 from 140.4. Assessments on order books in both sectors improved from the previous month.

The European Commission reported earlier that consumer confidence in the eurozone increased month over month in September while economic sentiment weakened.
