SoftBank Group Corp. CEO Masayoshi Son wants to invest in Uber Technologies, Inc. or Lyft Inc. to expand his company's interests in the ride-hailing market to the U.S., The Wall Street Journal reported Aug. 7.
"The U.S. is a very big market, the most important market, so we are definitely very much interested," Son said at a news conference.
The Japanese conglomerate SoftBank and Chinese ride-hailing service Didi Chuxing recently invested US$2 billion in Southeast Asian ride-hailing service GrabTaxi Holdings Pte. Ltd. SoftBank has also invested in Asian ride-hailing companies such as India's Ola and China's Didi Chuxing.
