Mobile shopping in South Korea up 35.5% in June

Growth in smartphone usage in South Korea fueled a 35.5% increase in purchases made through mobile devices in June, Yonhap News Agency reported Aug. 2.

Citing government data, the news agency said South Korea is among countries with the highest smartphone penetration rates, with eight out of 10 Koreans using a smartphone.

The report also cited data from Statistics Korea, which showed that smartphone and tablet transactions garnered 3.75 trillion won in June from 2.77 trillion South Korean won a year earlier. Mobile transaction accounted for 60.3% of all online purchases in June.

Similarly, mobile bookings for travel and movie tickets increased 24.2%in June from the same period in 2016 to 543.2 billion won, while sales of cosmetics products rose 31.8% to 336.5 billion won.

Clothing sales surged 27.1% to 417.8 billion won, while electronic goods worth 379.9 billion won were bought through smartphones, a 42.8% increase from the previous year, the news agency reported.

As of Aug. 2, US$1 was equivalent to 1,122.34 South Korean won.
