Sweden is reviewing permitting system, minister says

Sweden's government is seeking to improve its permitting system, the country's minister for enterprise and innovation revealed at the Euro Mine Expo in Skellefteå, Sweden.

A study is presently underway to assess options to streamline processes, shorten lead times and limit costs, Mikael Damberg said June 12.

"The permitting process today is not effective; it is (uncertain) and it takes too much time," he explained on the sidelines of the event.

In particular the granting of environmental permits — a key requirement for projects in various industries, including but not limited to mining — is being revisited.

Executives had previously decried that institutional risks of large investments were too high due to long lead times and an uncertain outcome of the permitting process, Damberg elaborated.

"(Improving this system) doesn't mean we should lower our expectations or our sustainability demands on the industry, but we could and should do more to make the process better," he stated.

A group of industry experts has been consulted as part of the ongoing review, which is set to complete on Sept. 28.

According to Damberg, models implemented in mining jurisdictions such as Australia and Canada are being assessed, while there is also an option on the table to fast track "particularly important projects."
