SoftBank to acquire Alphabet's robotics companies

SoftBank Group Corp. has agreed to acquire Boston Dynamics from Alphabet Inc., the company said June 8.

As part of the deal, Alphabet is also selling Schaft, a Japanese bipedal robotics company, to SoftBank. Terms of the deal, which is subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals, were not disclosed.

Marc Raibert, CEO and founder of Boston Dynamics, and his team will join SoftBank.

SoftBank Group Chairman and CEO Masayoshi Son said, "Smart robotics are going to be a key driver of the next stage of the Information Revolution, and Marc and his team at Boston Dynamics are the clear technology leaders in advanced dynamic robots."
