Uniqlo Japan same-store sales drop 5.3% YOY in December 2019

Fast Retailing Co. Ltd. reported a 5.3% year-over-year drop in domestic same-store sales for its flagship apparel brand Uniqlo in December 2019 due to persistently high temperatures that resulted in sluggish sales of cold-weather clothing.

Customer numbers on a same-store basis during the month fell 2.2% year over year, with average purchase per customer also dropping 3.1%.

Sales from the Japanese fast-fashion company's directly run Uniqlo stores, including online sales, fell 5.5% year over year in December 2019 as customer numbers also fell 2.2%.

On a year-to-date basis, Uniqlo Japan's same-store sales were down 4.5% from 2018, while sales from its directly run stores and online marketplace were also down 4.8%.
