Shoprite recalls red viennas after test showed presence of listeria

South African grocery retailer Shoprite Holdings Ltd. on March 16 recalled a batch of its Farmer's Deli Red Viennas after an initial testing showed the presence of listeria monocytogenes.

The company added that it has removed all Farmer's Deli Red and Smoked Viennas from its shelves and urged customers to return affected products for a full refund, even without proof of purchase.

Shoprite clarified that listeria monocytogenes is different from listeria ST6, which was the bacteria that prompted Tiger Brands Ltd. to recall its Enterprise-branded ready-to-eat processed meat range earlier in March.
