Jury asks Apple to pay $302.4M in damages in patent case

A federal jury in Texas asked to pay VirnetX Inc. morethan $302.4 million in damages in an alleged patent-infringement case.

According to a Sept. 30 court filing, the jury decided thatthe technology used in Apple's FaceTime calling feature infringed on two ofVirnetX patents. The damage award also includes the amount theiPhone maker must pay for using VirnetX technology in virtual private networkon demand.

The verdict comes after the U.S. Patent and Trademark Officeinvalidated four ofVirnetX's patents that it had accused Apple of infringing. In August, U.S.District Judge Robert Schroeder vacateda verdict ordering Apple to pay $625.6 million to VirnetX for infringingVirnetX's patented technology.
