Apple Inc. won the dismissal of Xiaomi Inc.'s request to register "Mi Pad," the name of its tablet, as a European Union trademark, Reuters reported Dec. 5, citing an official statement.
The EU's General Court ruled that the name could confuse consumers since the name was too similar to Apple's own iPad. While giving the verdict, the court agreed with the EU Intellectual Property Office that English-speaking consumers may read the prefix "mi" as "my."
The Chinese device manufacturer has the option to appeal the ruling at the Court of Justice of the European Union.
