Nuclear update: Total availability rises as 3 units increase output

Total U.S. nuclear plant availability rose early March 16 to 89.45%, up from 88.48% on March 15 and also above the 89.03% reported on the same day last year.

Giving a boost to total output was increased production at three reactors. LaSalle 1 in Illinois, which is owned by Exelon Corp., was pegged at 85% early March 16, rising from 30% on March 15. Exelon's Bryon 2, which is also in Illinois, was operating at 100% power early March 16, up from 90% on March 15. Xcel Energy Inc.'s Prairie Island 1 plant in Minnesota was at 99% power early March 16, climbing from 40% on March 15.

However, private sources say Duke Energy Corp.'s Catawba 2 in South Carolina and Entergy Corp.'s Indian Point 2 in New York may be taken offline for refueling outages in the next few days. As of early March 16, Catawba 2 was at 85% power while Indian Point 2 was at 97% power.

As of early March 16, ten units across the U.S are offline.
