Report: Peru's Kuczynski may face another impeachment bid

Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski may face another attempt to remove him from office after the New Peru party shifted its stance and said it would now support an impeachment motion, Bloomberg News reported.

New Peru, which abstained from Kuczynski's failed impeachment vote in December 2017, said Feb. 1 that there was new information about the president's ties to the Brazilian builder Odebrecht SA. Allegations that the president received bribes from Odebrecht triggered the vote.

New Peru joins the leftist Broad Front party for a new impeachment motion. Lawmakers of a third party, Popular Force, said they will also support a new impeachment motion, citing a statement on the Peruvian Congress website.

New Peru, Broad Front and Popular Force have 81 of the 130 seats in Congress. An impeachment motion would need 87 votes to pass. Last week, Alliance for Progress lawmaker Cesar Villanueva said his party, which holds eight seats, is considering proposing an impeachment motion, Bloomberg reported.

Panamericana Television reported on Jan. 28 ,that prosecutors have information about bank transactions involving Kuczynski, his company Westfield Capital and Odebrecht when he was a government minister more than a decade ago. The president has denied knowledge of Westfield's transactions with Odebrecht, saying he had handed over the running of the company to an associate.
