Taproot Energy gets DJ Basin acreage dedication, plans midstream expansion

Private equity-backed Taproot Energy Partners LLC obtained a long-term acreage dedication in the DJ Basin for crude oil transportation and announced an expansion of its existing midstream system in the production area.

Taproot, through its affiliate Taproot Rockies Midstream LLC, received a dedication of almost 70,000 gross acres from Bonanza Creek Energy Inc. subsidiary Bonanza Creek Energy Operating Co. LLC. Bonanza Creek's oil and gas producing assets are concentrated in Weld County, Colo., in the DJ Basin.

The agreement brings the total acreage dedicated to Taproot's Baja midstream system to nearly 175,000 gross acres, according to a Sept. 16 news release.

To support the new dedication, Taproot plans to extend the Baja system about 35 miles south to move Bonanza Creek's crude to the system for redelivery at Tallgrass Energy Partners LP's Buckingham terminal, with final delivery to Cushing, Okla. The expansion, called the Rattlesnake extension, is expected to enter service in the second quarter of 2020, according to Taproot COO Rod Donovan.

Besides the expansion, Taproot is also looking to build a truck unloading and storage facility that would provide producer and marketing customers with a crude delivery point in Weld County.

Taproot is a Denver-based midstream company backed by private equity firm Energy Spectrum Capital LP.
