Murray Energy to wind down production at Powhatan coal mine

Murray EnergyCorp. said it will wrap up underground coal mining production atits Powhatan No. 6 mine in November 2016.

The mine was previously slated for in July, but the life of themine had been extended by a few months. According to a statement from thecompany, the mine employs 431 employees.

"We will transfer as many of these employees as practicableto other operations, however, most of them will be laid off," a May 2statement from the company said.

According to U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administrationdata, the NorthernAppalachia mine producedabout 4.8 million tons of coal in 2015. The mine produced about 1.2 milliontons of coal in the first quarter of 2016.
